THE AUTOPSY OF UNSPENT LOVE
PART IV: THE REHABILITATION
Chapter 17: The Eulogy at Breakfast
Page 6 / 6
Scene 3: The Kitchen Table Meera sat across from her husband, Ankit. Ankit was eating poha, scrolling through news on his phone. He was a quiet man, the kind who fades into the background of a "Superwoman's" life. Meera usually found his quietness irritating. Why doesn't he have more drive? she would think. Today, she looked at his hands. They were steady hands. Hands that had changed diapers, fixed leaks, and held her when she had panic attacks, without ever asking for credit. Meera took a deep breath. She felt terrified. Being vulnerable was harder than closing a million-dollar deal. "Ankit," she said. "Hmm?" He didn't look up. "Milk is finished. I added it to the list." "Ankit, put the phone down." He looked up, surprised. "What? Did I forget something?" "No," Meera said. She pulled out the card Dr. Farah had given her. Her hands shook. "I want to tell you something. I want to tell you... that you are my anchor." Ankit frowned. "Is this a prank? Are you recording a reel?" "I'm serious," Meera said, her eyes welling up. "I spend all day running, fighting, winning. And I come home, and you are just... here. You are solid. You never ask me to be 'on.' You let me be boring. I never thank you for that. I criticize you for being slow, but your slowness is the only thing that slows me down. If something happened to you... I would spin off the earth." Ankit stared at her. The spoon hovered halfway to his mouth. He saw the tears in her eyes. He saw the crack in the Superwoman armor. He put the spoon down. He reached across the table and covered her hand with his. "I'm not going anywhere, Meera," he said softly. "I'm right here." Meera burst into tears. It wasn't the hysterical crying of a breakdown; it was the soft, melting crying of a Reunion. She realized then that the "Good Points" she would have missed were right there, sitting across from her, eating poha. She didn't have to say "Alas." She could say "Thank you." ________________________________________ Key Concepts Covered in Narrative: 1. Resume Virtues vs. Eulogy Virtues. 2. The Living Eulogy. 3.
